Welcome to the Reel Review. I have created this blog because I tend to disagree with all of the movie reviews I read in the paper. I can no longer stand by while the movies I love get slammed and the worst of them all get 5 stars. It has got to the point where I choose the movies I see based on how little stars they get in the paper. Half a star has become a must see for me. 5 stars – I don’t even bother. Please feel free to agree or disagree with my reviews because that’s what it’s all about. I hope you enjoy the REEL REVIEW!!

PREDATORS

Starring: Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Lawrence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo

A group of complete strangers, all with a knack for killing, are unwillingly transported to a distant planet for the purpose of being hunted by the universe's ultimate hunter; the Predators.

Wow, this movie sucked. The first "Predator" is one of my favourite movies so i had to see the new take on a classic. To start off, Adrien Brody is the tough guy. I could end the review here but ill power on. Brody puts an annoying "Clint Eastwood-ish" voice on the whole movie which actually gets pretty funny the more you hear it. Bad "tough guy" casting aside, this movie made little to no sense. Huge plot points went unexplained, the huge twist was just plain stupid and the ending leaves you thinking that they'll make another one; which you don't want.

I award it no points, and may god have mercy on Adrien Brody's soul

GET HIM TO THE GREEK

Starring: Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, P Diddy

Aaron Greenberg (Jonah Hill) is an ambitious 23-year old working at a record label on the verge of going under. In an attempt to save the label, Greenberg suggests a reunion show featuring "infant sorrow", a once hugely popular rock band. He is also given the job of escorting the band's lead singer, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), from London to the show in L.A. This job is bound to have its problems as snow is a crazy womanizer and addicted to every substance known to man.

I found this movie very disappointing. I had heard mixed things from a lot of people so had to check it out for myself. Although the characters were taken from a movie i did enjoy (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), this flick rarely made me laugh and i found myself checking my watch, waiting for the end. Never a good sign. That being said, Hill and Brand did work well together and did produce some funny stuff, but most of the gags and humour seemed a bit forced. It is the "try-hard" of movies; and no one likes a try-hard.

THE OTHER GUYS

Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L Jackson

Behind every hero is someone doing all the paperwork. This movie is all about those guys. When the toughest city in the world loses its two hero cops, Allen Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) answer the call.

As you would expect, this movie is hilarious. Will Ferrell teams back up with Adam McKay (Director of Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights etc) and the results don't disappoint. Mixing action in with the brand of humour the pair are known for makes this movie a winner. I wasn't sure about Mark Wahlberg in a comedy, but he does an awesome job of keeping up with the always ridiculous Will Ferrell. Eva Mendes is great as Ferrell's unappreciated, smoking hot wife and Michael Keaton plays the police chief to a tee. If you like the rest of Adam McKays work, you will definitely enjoy this movie.

DATE NIGHT

Starring: Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Common, Mark Wahlberg, Leighton Meester, Mila Kunis and James Franco

The movie is about Claire and Phil Foster (Tina Fey and Steve Carrell), a married couple who's marriage turned has into more of a routine than marriage bliss. When discovering that their friends were splitting for that very reason, the couple hit an exclusive Manhattan restaurant in an effort to inject some much needed excitement back into their lives. A case of mistaken identity turns their night upside down and gives them more excitement than they could have ever imagined.

When watching the trailer for this movie, i thought it had potential. Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are both really funny so the thought of them teaming up encouraged me to see the flick. How wrong i was. Besides the odd laugh here and there, and the cameos from Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and James Franco, this movie was very disappointing. It dragged on to the point where i was looking at my watch waiting for it to end. Id definitely give this one a miss if i were you but feel free to disagree.

IRON MAN 2

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L Jackson

This movie kicks off where the last one ended. Tony Stark reveals himself as Iron Man and soaks up all the publicity he can in the process. But while this is all going on, the invention that is keeping him alive is also slowly killing him.

Delivering what it promises, Iron Man 2 is full of action, humour and a tiny bit of romance thrown in at the end. Mickey Rourke plays the new "bad guy" to a tee and causes some problems for Tony Stark and his new side kick "War Machine" (Don Cheadle). I'm pretty sure there were some parts of this flick that only readers of the marvel comics would have picked up on, but it isn't essential to the movie.

I recommend this movie if you want a no thinking involved, easy to watch, action movie.

SALT

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor

In "Salt", Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent accused to be a Russian spy that could be activated at any time to eliminate world leaders.

This movie has its moments. The fast paced action and hectic escape scenes managed to keep my attention for the most part. And Jolie kicks some serious ass in this flick. But those positive points aside, to be honest, the trailer makes this movie look better than it actually is. Its pretty much an hour and a half of the same thing. Angelina Jolie running and fighting. While as a guy, that does sound awesome, i'm trying to give a review for everyone. Make up your own mind about this one.

THE EXPENDABLES

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lungren, Terry Crews, Steve Austin, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger

The Expendables are a team of huge mercenaries (and Jet Li) with varying "special skills" who take on the missions that the rest of the world won't touch. That's pretty much all you need to know. If you're looking for a deep story line, clever screenplay or even a movie that makes total sense, The Expendables probably isn't the movie for you. However, if you love awesomely corny one-liners, cameos for the sake of cameos and want to see five guys take on an entire army, you're like me and will find this movie both hilarious and entertaining. While some parts of this movie try to show emotion and romance, that isn't why people are going to see this movie. This is a no-thinking necessary, hour and a half of ass kicking and explosions. That's it.
